The Miracle of the Mass

For Catholics, the Holy Mass is the most sacred act of worship we can participate in on earth. At every Mass a miracle occurs—we meet Jesus in the Holy Eucharist! Through the power of the Holy Spirit ordinary bread and wine become the Sacred Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus. We, His disciples, are nourished by His Body and Blood and the Words of Christ’s Gospel are fulfilled:

“For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.” John 6:55-56

If ever you hear someone saying the Mass is “boring”, it’s because they need to be spiritually enlightened to the greatness of what is truly occurring in the holy sanctuary of the Church. We are receiving the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus! We are becoming One with Our Saviour Jesus! If we could see with mystical eyes, we would see the choirs of angels surrounding the altar where the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus dwell in the consecrated bread and wine.

At the Mass we are not just remembering what happened at the Last Supper, we are remembering the Passion of Christ and the great sacrifice of Our Lord and we are offering this sacrifice to God for the atonement of sin. We are remembering how much Jesus suffered to give us the Sacrament of His Body and Blood and so with great reverence and with holy desire and with hearts humbled and contrite we come to the Lord’s Table.  Jesus is not suffering each and every time we celebrate the Mass.  He suffered once for all sinners for all time:  “For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.”  Hebrews 10:10

Jesus instructed His apostles to celebrate the Mass. The institution of the Eucharist was established by Jesus Himself and is perpetuated by His Church: “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19

After Jesus died, resurrected and ascended into heaven, His apostles did just as Jesus had commanded them to do “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 St. Paul warned the people not to receive the Body and Blood of Our Lord in an unworthy manner, but with sacredness and awe: “So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.” 1 Corinthians 11: 27-29

Jesus suffered so much for our redemption, but it is possible to go to Mass and not think about Jesus dying on the Cross for us. It’s possible not to see Our Holy Lord in agony suffering for our salvation. The reason I created this page, https://passionofchrist.ca is I wanted to help people carve a special memory of Christ’s Passion upon their minds and upon their hearts. This was the gift Jesus gave to me and I am trying to share this gift with others. Take a Scriptural Journey to Calvary and witness the Passion of Christ with your own eyes.

Many years ago I heard Jesus speaking to my heart. He was urging me to meditate on His Passion. In fact, many years before I began meditating on His Passion I used to look at the clock at 3pm wondering ‘Why Lord do I feel so restless at this time?’ In fact, one day I even asked Jesus ‘Did you die at this time?’ I did not hear Him answering me, but years later I learned that indeed it was at 3 o’clock in the afternoon that Jesus died for our salvation on the Cross.

My meditations on the Passion of Christ are now deep in my heart and always on my mind and when I look at the Altar in Church I see the Cross of Jesus. When I see the Priest lifting up the Host in the consecration I remember Jesus suffering and dying on the Cross for me and you and all souls! Jesus said, “when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” John 12:32

I bring my meditations on the Passion of Christ into the Mass and I draw upon them to help me enter into a special state of awe, of reverence, of desire for the Holy One who gives everything for His Bride. What could be more meaningful than encountering the Living God, Jesus, in the Eucharist? If the Mass is not the greatest experience of your life, I would encourage you to begin meditating on the Passion of Christ and bring these memories into the Mass with you. Hold them in your heart as you remember how much Jesus suffered to give us His Body and Blood. Never forget how much Jesus suffered to open the gates of paradise to us!

Let’s take responsibility for our spiritual development by reading the Word of God outside of the Mass. Let’s schedule time to pray and to sit quietly with Our Lord to let Him talk to us. At 3pm, stop and see Jesus dying on the Cross for you. See your Holy Saviour Jesus Christ giving up His life to prepare a place for you in paradise and pray for His mercy upon all souls. Jesus loves you so much!

Come to Mass and celebrate the greatness of God’s love. Come to Mass to experience the Miracle of the Eucharist as we remember the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus and are privileged to receive His Body and Blood. Come to celebrate His Resurrection and triumph over death and then let us go to love and serve Our Lord and one another knowing we are One with Jesus. Jesus lives in us through the grace of the Holy Eucharist.

Let us be One Body of Christ: “Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.” 1 Corinthians 10:17
