What is wisdom?
Let’s learn what wisdom is by reflecting on the Word of God.
In the Book of Proverbs it is written, “Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” Proverbs 9: 9-10
St Paul wrote, “Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength. Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1: 22-31
This Scripture reveals some important things. I believe that the reason that “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” is because once we acknowledge God’s omnipotence and God’s power to forgive us or punish us we will likely begin to make choices that God will approve of. To fear God is to live a life that is reverent, that acknowledges that God will one day judge us and that He is both mercy and justice. So it is wise to live a life that is honorable where we respect God’s commandments to love Him and one another. “Fear of the Lord” acknowledges God’s greatness and God’s authority over all creatures; It doesn’t mean we are afraid of Him, but moreover that we respect His greatness, His power and His authority to judge us.
St. Paul’s passage reinforces the message that it is through the love and power of Jesus that all great works are accomplished, for Jesus is the source of all righteousness and holiness for He is righteous and He is holy. We are saved through Jesus; eternal life is the gift we receive from the great sacrifice of the Holy One. So if we wish to boast, let us boast that Jesus is Lord, the giver of all good things, through Him all things are possible. We are nothing without Jesus!
Use me Holy One for whatever purpose You desire. I want to be an instrument of Your holy Will. I want to love You and honour You and those around me. Teach me and guide me. I want to help You to become better known and I want the world to bow at Your feet every day at the time You died for us, 3 o’clock (each of us in our local time zones) as we remember your infinite sacrifice. I want the world to know how much You suffered to redeem us and to open the gates of Paradise for us. I want the world to believe in You, to adore You, to hope in You and to love You and to acknowledge that You are the source of wisdom, truth and love! Jesus, You are the Holy One! You are the Saviour of the World! You are my heart’s desire!
